Archimedes was a mathematician and philosopher in ancient Greece. He lived during the time of the Roman Republic, under the rule of Rome. He was a genius in math and science, but he is best known for his design of the Archimedes screw. While sitting on his bath of sand, he noticed how water rushed down through a tube of water resting on top of the sand.

This led him to look at the problem from different angles. He then discovered that force pushes against an object, while water is pushed into that object.
